Dark beauty: the Lanza's salamander (Salamandra lanzai)

The Lanza’s salamander (Salamandra lanzai), a pearl of biodiversity living in part of the western Italian Alps. This picture has been taken some years ago, but it still remember me how unique nature can be.

Its dark color is not for fashion, but it’s one of the adaptations to high altitudes where this animal lives. The ovoviviparity is another adaptation of this species, that doesn’t deposit eggs or larvae in the water, but it keeps them inside the body and gives birth to fully developed miniature replicas of the adults.
